“I Want To Be Able To Function and Not Be Stopped by My Pain”

By Ben Plumb Why Your Subconscious May Be Able To Give You a Powerful Tool for Doing That–A Good Night’s Sleep Being able to function starts with good sleep-without it you’re a mess. Yet pain prevents you from using the reliable sleep advice that works for other people. Here’s a possible way out of that dilemma. Sleep research has shown that the body keeps a meticulous accounting of how much sleep it is owed. Any amount less than what you need gets added to your sleep debt. For example, if you need eight hours of sleep and only get seven for seven days in a row, at the end of the week you have as much sleep debt as if you had stayed up all night. This impairs health, reduces performance, and puts you at serious risk while driving. The Importance of Sleep in Pain Relief The foundation of your ability to function despite your pain is sleep. If you have chronic pain, sleep debt not only affects you the way it affects everyone else, but also makes your pain seem far worse than when you’re rested. This is true regardless of whether you have back pain or pain in the neck or other extremities, arthritis pain, fibromyalgia pain, or neuropathic pain (nerve pain). The Sleep Dilemma You Face There’s no secret about what it takes to get a good night’s rest. Sleep experts concur that you need to go to bed and get up at the same time every day; go to bed in a dark, quiet room; and avoid stimulating foods or activity before bed. Yet as a person in chronic pain you can do all of that and still have severe sleep problems. Your pain simply won’t leave you alone long enough to fall sleep easily or stay asleep for long. Better Sleep Through Visualization Statements You may be able to resolve the above dilemma by engaging your subconscious mind through the use of visualization statements. Visualization statements represent the specific language that your subconscious wants you to read back to it to help ease your pain. Theyre simple and are targeted directly at the main factors that could bring you relief. You can obtain these statements by learning how to communicate directly with your own subconscious mind. The process is straightforward and can be done at home by working with a facilitator over the telephone. You you need no special skills and no previous experience in working with the subconscious. Here are five ways that visualization may be able to help you get better sleep: 1. Finding a comfortable position. When you have serious pain the biggest problem you face may be that you can’t find any position comfortable enough to sleep in. No amount of turning and adjusting can give you relief, so you stay awake until exhaustion completely overtakes you-perhaps hours later. It’s possible to choose what you think might be a comfortable position, such as lying on your side, and use visualization statements to program the subconscious to make that position just comfortable enough for you to fall asleep. If you repeat this statement often enough you may find that within a few days it’s not so hard to fall asleep quickly. 2. Staying asleep despite the pain. Time and again pain may break through your sleep to awaken you. To avoid this it’s possible to visualize several different things: If cramped muscles are waking you up, you can attempt to program your subconscious to keep your muscles relaxed during sleep. If turning over into a particularly painful position is waking you up, you can visualize yourself being free of a desire to turn over in bed. If throbbing or stiffness after a certain time in bed is waking you up, you can visualize that your body remains calm and flexible during sleep. 3. Getting back to sleep if you do awaken. You may be able to fall asleep easily enough but awaken after a few hours–not necessarily from pain, but due to pain meds or other factors that may be disrupting your sleep. To get back to sleep it’s possible to learn what visualization your subconscious would find most relaxing and repeat it to yourself over and over as you lie in bed. For example, your subconscious may simply want you to visualize that every night you attain deep sleep. Or it may indicate a particular phrase that you could repeat. 4. Getting sound and refreshing sleep. Sometimes you may sleep for eight hours but wake up feeling exhausted. This could be due to any number of factors, one of which may be that your pain prevents you from obtaining the short periods of very deep sleep during the night that are the most restful. By crafting a visualization statement about sound and refreshing sleep that your subconscious agrees with, you may be able to wake up more energized. This could happen even though you have not specifically identified why your sleep is not sound. 5. Handling the poor sleep of fibromyalgia. In the special case of fibromyalgia pain the sympathetic nervous system may be creating fight-or-flight type agitation that makes it very difficult for you to sleep. One approach that seems to work is simply to visualize your body as being free of agitation. Another approach is to work on the specific parts of the body most affected, for example the feet and legs. Yet another is to visualize calm in any situation that may be creating unusual stress–for example a job or a relationship. A further method is to visualize that the Alpha-2 receptors of your sympathetic nervous system are receptive to catecholamine, a substance that is thought to calm that system down. Not Being Stopped Overall, visualization seems to have a positive effect on sleep even when you’re in pain. It is necessary to learn what specific language your own subconscious wants to hear about sleep. But once you’ve deciphered that information you may be able to trigger just enough of a change to help you sleep. The good news is that if even one of these visualization techniques works for your sleep, it may be able to make the difference between being stopped and not being stopped by your pain. Aromatherapy And How It Can Help With The Healing Process

By Kerris Samson Aromatherapy is a form of herbal medicine where is uses the scents from essential oils which have been distilled from herbs, flowers or trees and help in improving a persons health and vitality. It used correctly they can not only reenergize and rejuvenate a persons mind by they can do the same for the persons body and spirit as well. There are many ways in which aromatherapy can be used from candles and oils through to soaps and lotions. The scented oils that are used in aromatherapy (essential oils) are extracted from the various plants etc., through distillation and although there are many different ways in which this can be done, in reality they are pretty much basically the same. The plant or herbs etc. are placed into hot water until steam is produced thus releasing and carrying the chemicals including the aromatic compounds and as the steam is produced it is chilled in a condenser and what is left behind is then collected. As the essential oil collects on top of the distilled water (hydrosol) collected in the condenser it can be scooped off and stored in jars. Therefore if you are looking to purchase some herb or flower water the best type of buy is that which is the by-product of the distillation process for obtaining essential oils. Although there are some waters which have had essential oils added to them and these are not as good as the waters (hydrosols) produced from the distillation process. Unfortunately the common misconception thought by many people is that because these scented oils have only come from plants then they are able to use as much as they like. However, essential oils are very highly concentrated and should only be measured in drops and one drop is equal to the same amount as say two cups of normal scented water and therefore ingestion of 1 ounce of essential oils could be fatal. Therefore unless you are actually a skilled and qualified aromatherapist it is vital that you only use essential oils on the skin and always mix the essential oil drops with a carrier such as sweet almond oil. It is important to remember that essential oil which has not been diluted can burn a persons skin. Finally below are a number of hints that you should look at and remember when using essential oils in relation to aromatherapy. 1. Read the label on the essential oils container and take notice of any advice that is provided. 2. Always make sure that they are kept well out of the reach of children. 3. Keep essential oils away from eyes. 4. Dilute the essential oils using carrier oil before using on your skin or you will get burnt. 5. Do not ever ingest essential oils they are only for external application. 6. Prior to using the oils test them first. You can do this by diluting a drop of essential oil with a carrier oil and then applying to the skin on your inner arm. Should you notice any irritation to your skin in this area then discontinue the use of this product. 7. Prior to using any essential oils check that you are okay to use them, this is particular important for pregnant women and those people suffering from certain health conditions as there are some herbs which they may need to avoid. Alternative Treatment for Depression: Learning How Herbs Can Aid in Treating Depression Naturally

By Tess Thompson If you are like many of the 20.9 million adults in the U.S. who are suffering from depression, you have probably debated the pros and cons of taking prescription antidepressants. While depression can often be combated with therapy alone, some professionals do recommend medication for certain cases. The right type and dosage of a prescription medication can sometimes meet with success for a patient, but many experience side effects that outweigh the benefits. Side effects vary between the different types of antidepressant, but the most commonly prescribed medications are selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs). Paxil, Prozac and Zoloft are all SSRIs, and often produce side effects such as sexual dysfunction, nausea, diarrhea and headaches, and in some cases thoughts of suicide. In order to avoid these, more and more people are deciding instead to explore natural remedies for depression. Among those who know, St. John’s Wort is almost unanimously agreed upon as the alternative treatment for depression. Many believe that it is more effective at treating depression than many prescription medications but with fewer risks. The active compounds in St. John’s Wort help naturally reduce feelings of sadness, anxiety and worthlessness, and many who take it also report less exhaustion and fewer headaches. Best of all, this herb often produces no side effects, although some might experience sensitivity to sun or other minor side effects. Ginko Biloba is a natural ingredient that improves circulation in the brain, which often in turn improves memory and also alleviates some symptoms of depression. It is not as effective as St. John’s Wort, but it can be taken in conjunction with other natural ingredients as an overall mood-booster. Siberian Ginseng aids the balance of essential neurotransmitters like serotonin, norepinephrine and dopamine in the brain. Taking Siberian Ginseng regularly can lead to improved feelings of general well-being. Passion flower is another natural ingredient that can help treat depression, anxiety and sleep disorders. Passion flower is a natural salve that helps to calm and soothe. When it is combined with St. John’s Wort, it can be very successful in treating depression naturally. These and many other herbs are helpful in alleviating many of the symptoms of depression, and as with anything you put into your body, each person will react differently to them. It is important to allow a trial period in order to feel the effects of the natural medications, as some will take several weeks to take effect. As always, you should seek a doctor’s advice before you decide to stop taking a prescription medication, and you should avoid combining prescription medications with natural medications. Hopefully, you will find a safe, healthy combination of natural ingredients helps you to feel consistently better over time. Getting a Car Loan in New York

By [http://ezinearticles.com/?expert=J.A._Hale]J.A. Hale Getting a car loan in New York can be tricky if you do not follow the steps in the right order. One thing that you need to be aware of especially is the fact that before you can get a car loan in New York, you will need to show proof of auto insurance. It may seem like putting the cart before the horse, but in New York, you pretty much need the car insured before you can actually buy it. This is because if you purchase a car with a loan, New York law requires the dealer to handle the titling and registration for you. And before you can register your car in New York, you have to have proof of insurance. Be aware that when the dealer handles all of the necessary steps to getting your registration and titling, many of them will charge you the additional fees above and beyond the amount of your loan. Some will roll these charges into your car loan, and others will allow you to arrange to pay the expenses out of pocket. Here are some other steps to follow when getting a car loan in New York: 1. Shop around for the best interest rates on your car loan. Dealers usually do not have the best interest rates. You can usually get a better rate from a bank or credit union. 2. If you are responding to a special financing offer in an ad, bring the ad in with you to show the dealer. If you have poor credit, you are not likely to get the advertised rate, but you might be able to negotiate a lower rate than the dealer is initially willing to give you. 3. Dont pay more for a factory-ordered car than for one already sitting on the premises. 4. If you get a car loan to buy a vehicle from a private seller, be aware of the needed documents you will have to submit to have the car property registered: Proof of insurance (New York State Insurance ID Card) Proof that you own the car Documentation of your identity, and separate documentation of your birthdate Damage and odometer disclosure statements A special form: Form MV-82 Enough money to cover all of the fees that will be assessed (title certificate fee, property tax, registration fee, plates, automobile use tax, any transfer fees that may be necessary, sales tax) Proof of sales tax paid, sales tax exemption (if already paid) or the purchase price (so that the DMV can assess how much sales tax you owe. 7 Suggestions for Choosing a College When the College Chooses You

By J.K. Dennis How do I choose a college that is right for me? This is the question that Im asked at least once a week. And frankly, it isnt easy trying to explain to students (and their parents) one very basic fact of the college admissions process: You dont choose the college. The college chooses you. Here is a very simple way you can look at this complicated process. You and a crowd of high school graduates are standing on one side of a big field. Each one of you desperately wants to go to a good college. On the other side of the field are all the colleges and universities that exist in the country. After assessing your qualifications (merit), you send applications to all of the schools that you wish to attend. The admissions officer at those schools sends you a letter of acceptance or rejection. Out of your acceptances, you pick one college and walk across that field and through the doors of that particular institution. For different reasons, different students will go to different colleges and some will not go at all. Did you make the choice or did someone make it for you? Usually, the college makes the choice for you. You get to choose from those schools that actually choose you. For the most part, the people who work in college admissions are gatekeepers. They can accept or reject your application at will. If necessary, they can come up with some pretty convincing evidence to support their decisions: high or low entrance exam scores, excellent or poor grades, outstanding or terrible writing samples, or an abundance or lack of extracurricular activities. Based on such criteria, it seems as if everybody in that big open field is getting a fair shot based on merit. But this only disguises some of the built in advantages that go to you if you are a student who has the right background. The reality is that most students just dont have the right background. Supposedly, the good news about higher education is that it is egalitarian. Regardless of your background, there is a college on the other side of that field that fits you–all the way from the community college with its open door admissions policy to the elite university with its not-so-open door admissions policy. It seems as if that great tracking system you thought you escaped in high school tracks you right into college and your place in society. So are you going to choose or be chosen? With very few exceptions, most of you will be chosen. It hurts me to say that because it suggests that there is something terribly twisted about our entire educational system. Maybe, it is. Maybe, it isnt. Until the verdict comes in, heres what I suggest you do: Suggestion #1 Know that the college admissions process is a game mostly decided by people who must make assumptions about you, your abilities, and your potential. Suggestion #2 Know that most colleges cannot afford to be overly selective or theyd go out of business. Suggestion #3 Know that your determination and your ideas can lead you to success, in spite of your background. Suggestion #4 Know that going to an elite college doesnt necessarily mean you will get a good education and a high-status career. Suggestion #5 Know that going to a community college doesnt necessarily mean you will get a bad education and a dead-end job. Suggestion #6 Know that you are always much more than where you go to college and the amount of tuition you are able to pay. Suggestion #7 Not only should you know thisyou have to believe it. J.K. 7-Day Weight Loss Motivation Guide

By Craig Ballantyne Weight loss is hard. Everyone loses their motivation for diet and exercise. So that’s why I’m bringing you 7 tips to help you lose more fat in less time over this upcoming week. Here are this week’s guidelines. Monday Plan to set a personal record in your workout today. If you are a beginner, that might mean using a higher level on the cardio machine for 1-2 minutes, or doing 2-3 extra pushups per set. For the advanced fat loss program, it might mean using 2.5 more pounds per dumbbell in your split squats, or extending your intervals by 5 seconds per sprint. Tuesday Plan to get 30 minutes of activity. For beginners, walking is acceptable. It helps you recover from Monday’s workout and simply improves your overall health. Advanced fat loss programs might use a bodyweight circuit on this day. Also, I want you to make a big nutrition change on this day and eliminate all sources of trans-fatty acids from your diet. Read your food labels, and don’t eat anything that contains hydrogenated oils. Also, be sure to look at the breakdown of fats – if the total fat content is greater than the sum of the saturated and unsaturated fat contents, then the product contains trans-fats. Trans-fats will kill ya. As Dr. Bruce Holub from the University of Guelph says, “there is no safe level of the fats and food producers should cease and desist the industrial production of trans fats in the country.” Wednesday Perform your regularly schedule strength and interval training workout. And if you haven’t already, purchase a new cooking appliance, such as a grill or steamer to help you prepare healthy, nutritious, low-fat protein sources or high-fiber, nutrient rich vegetables in a convenient manner. Healthy food preparation is a SMALL effort for a LARGE reward. Thursday 30 minutes of activity, anyway that you can get it. And then at dinner, try a new source of lean protein, such as salmon, bison, or ostrich (or switch back to lean, red meat if you’ve only been chowing down on chicken). Friday Have another great strength and interval workout. And at some point during the day, recruit a new member into your social support group (remember I spoke about how important this is?), such as a new workout partner or healthy-eating nutrition buddy. This will add strength to your commitment. Saturday 30 minutes of activity. It’s the weekend, find something fun to do with a friend. On weekends, I try and get into the gym with an old friend and amaze them with several bodyweight exercises that they have never seen before. Sunday Get another 30 minutes of exercise nice and early to start your day. Then plan your shopping list, head on to the grocery store or even better a fresh, open market and get your weekly produce and lean protein sources. Make sure to include 1 new vegetable and 1 new source of lean protein in your purchases. One big step everyday towards a better body! Craig Ballantyne is a Certified Strength & Conditioning Specialist and writes for Men’s Health, Men’s Fitness, Maximum Fitness, Muscle and Fitness Hers, and Oxygen magazines. His trademarked Turbulence Training fat loss workouts have been featured multiple times in Men’s Fitness and Maximum Fitness magazines and all over the Internet, and have helped thousands of men and women around the world lose fat, gain muscle, and get lean in less than 45 minutes three times per week. Gastric Bypass Patients Resent Normal Eaters

By Kaye Bailey In the early weeks after having weight loss surgery almost all patients report resenting normal eaters. Some go as far to say the normal eaters flaunt their food consumption to make the WLS patient, who is eating meals the size of a chicken egg, feel inferior. In fact, this resentment has caused disputes among married couples and families. What is odd is that normal eaters dont realize how resentful the WLS patient feels. The normal eater is doing what they have always done and it doesnt feel unnatural. Seldom will a normal eater admit to purposefully consuming normal amounts of food in front the WLS patient simply to cause resentment. One successful method for WLS patients to cope with this resentment is to understand that what another person eats any other person has nothing to do with anyone else. Food intake is always a personal choice. This is the mantra I developed to cope with resenting the normal eaters: It has nothing to do with me that they are eating copious amounts of nutritionally void high-caloric foods. They are making their food choices and I am making my food choices. I could try some chocolate cake or a chili-dog or lobster bisque. But I chose not to because I will get violently sick, I will gain weight and I will feel self-loathing. I chose not to eat those foods because I have the self-respect to serve my body, my nutrition and my mind well. When others chose differently it is not about me – it is their choice and their problem. They are not flaunting in my face, they simply don’t know another way. I have chosen another way and I am living healthy and well because of my choice.
